Advances of Femtosecond Laser Written Waveguides in Dielectric Crystals

The dielectric crystals are important media for various optical applications due to their astonishing properties. Miniature photonic devices based on waveguiding structures have been incorporated in broad range of photonic devices that benefit from the excellent properties of crystals. By applying femtosecond laser writing/inscription, waveguides with diverse geometries have been produced in a number of crystals. In this talk, the fundamentals and recent progress of research on the design and implementation, particularly towards 3D configurations, of laser-written waveguiding structures in dielectric crystals is overviewed. With the engineering of the localized material modifications induced by femtosecond laser pulses, structures with on-demand geometries could be manufactured in dielectric crystals. The functions based on these devices for waveguide lasing and nonlinear frequency conversion are realized.
